![]() The mid-level Lariat starts at $74,474 and the high-end Platinum variant is just shy of $100,000 starting at $96,874. For the rest of us, the XLT trim level starts at $59,474. The fleet and business Pro model starts at $51,974. It comes standard on the Platinum and is only available to fleet customers on the low-end Pro model. The two middle trim levels can also be optioned with the Extended Range battery pack. The trim levels span the range from bare-bones vinyl seats without most of the fancy bells and whistles most truck buyers are looking for to the nearly $100,000 top-of-the-line variant. The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is available in four trim levels. ![]() Ford F-150 Lightning: Release date, pricing and trim levels Just don’t ask it to tow large loads for long distances. It drives better, has more cargo space, can power your home, and has an impressive range. But despite looking like every other F-150 on the road, the Lightning delivers a better experience for most drivers. Outside of some badging, the F-150 Lightning’s exterior is essentially the same as its gas counterpart. Regardless of display size, the system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Our XLT test vehicle had a 12-inch display and it was more than adequate for our needs. On the consumer side, the automaker’s Sync infotainment system is housed in either a portrait-oriented 15.5-inch touchscreen with a volume knob near the bottom of the screen or the standard 12-inch landscape display that ships with the XLT trim. In addition to the cargo space in the bed, the Lightning’s frunk has enough space to store tools, groceries, and other items that a driver wants out of sight. Power outlets are available everywhere and the vehicle’s ability to power a home from its battery pack is a huge draw for those that live in areas with frequent power outages. The pickup is a treasure chest of technology that people will actually use. Even better than the current king of pickup-ride quality, the Ram 1500. In fact, it’s the best riding pickup on the market right now. On the flip side, the lower center of gravity afforded by putting the pack where it is aids the Lightning's handling, enabling it to carve through corners with notable stability and minimal amounts of serious weight transfer. Thanks to an all-wheel-drive drivetrain and electric powertrain, the Lightning felt more planted to the asphalt than its gas counterparts and far smoother while driving around town and on the highway. The battery's visibly low position below the body may be a negative for any hardcore off-roaders (who will come to appreciate the built-in skidplates), though a lift can help solve the issue. ![]() One compromised metric, however, is the ramp breakover angle of 17.6 degrees, which is behind the F-150 XLT Super Crew's 20-degree figure. While articulating over uneven rock surfaces that required locking the differential in order to more easily pass, the truck didn't creak or moan, suggesting minimal body flex. Maneuvering the Lightning through an off-road course lent credence to Ford's claims that this is the strongest F-150 ever. The Lightning Pro weighs in at approximately 6,200 pounds, roughly 1,300 of which comes from the dual-layer lithium-ion pouch batteries nestled between its high-strength-steel frame rails. Don't like the sound? It can be turned off in a touchscreen submenu. For all the pomp and bluster of the F-150 Raptor, the Lighting Pro delivers similarly stirring performance with only a subtle hint of fabricated motor noise. Equally gratifying: the instant-on, traction-control-triggering, tail-squatting thrust summoned when squashing the accelerator pedal. Remarkably, we spent three hours rolling across Texas back roads and superslabs without an iota of fatigue. As refreshing as it is to blast ahead in near silence with copious torque, the Lightning's independent rear suspension setup steals the show by making the fossil-fuel-burning models' leaf spring setup feel like it predates the Pleistocene era. Although we'd prefer the option to fine-tune brake regeneration levels, the one-pedal driving mode (accessible via the menu in the touchscreen) offers strong enough off-throttle deceleration to make it addictively simple to maneuver through traffic without having to bother much with the actual brake pedal. Smooth, easily accessible power is the name of the game, enabling the big-bodied Lightning to boogie forward with an ease that defies its plus-sized dimensions.
